Emergency crews were called to a head-on collision between two vehicles approximately one-half mile west of West City Limits Road on S.D. Highway 50 at around 1:20 PM Thursday. A westbound passenger car collided nearly head-on with an eastbound SUV in poor weather conditions that included winds up to 50 MPH and blowing snow that reduced visibility to near zero at times, along with sub-zero wind chills. Yankton firefighters worked for 35 minutes to extricate the driver of the passenger car with the jaws of life. There was only one passenger in each car and both victims were transported by ambulance to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton with non-life threatening injuries. Highway 50 was closed and traffic was diverted for about an hour while crews cleared the scene. The Yankton Volunteer Fire Department, Yankton County Ambulance and Yankton County Sheriffs Office responded to the call. Photos courtesy of the Yankton Volunteer Fire Department.
