Ending #austerity will not repair a #scarred #generation @c_of_e @lambethpalace @magdalenealumni @pplsassembly @eapn . 10 Downing Streets austerity programme is “laying the foundation for lives overshadowed by #anxiety and scarred by a sense of #helplessness”, says Rowan Williams. Formerly The Archbishop of Canterbury, said the damage to young people will not be fixed by a “return to normal”, called for an #alternative to austerity as those on the sharp end of the cuts gather in Cambridge yesterday. They protested against the #NHS “sell-off”, the “cruel administration” of #disability #benefit tests and the so-called #BedroomTax at the The Peoples Assembly in Cambridge at the Castle Street Methodist Church. Dr Williams, the Master of Magdalene College, said: “Austerity today, imposed in a way that intensifies #inequality and #insecurity, means a generation deprived of their birthright. “The damage done now to the rising generation is not going to be repaired by some imagined ‘return to normal’ in however many years’ time. “We are laying the foundation for lives overshadowed by anxiety and scarred by a sense of helplessness. “We need to argue the case for alternatives that don’t blight the hopes of our children.” Olivier Tonneau, a member of the Cambridge Peoples Assembly, said the last five years have seen the rise of #poverty and precarious #employment alongside the dismantling of public services. He said the “#demonisation of the #poor” has increased social tensions and the #scapegoating of #immigrants has “paved the way for the electoral success of the racist UK Independence Party (UKIP)”. Mr Tonneau added: “In the face of a concerted assault on the social compact, it is more important than ever that the people assemble. Bringing together people of diverse horizons and walks of life is in itself an act of resistance.” The People’s Assembly, which has more than 80 branches across the country, describes itself as neither a political party or a single issue campaign, but a “common space of all those who suffer from austerity policies”. A #national #demonstration against austerity will take place in London on June 21.
