Esther N Mulusa MEETING MUNGIKI FACE TO FACE Naivasha is the hotbed and one of the main headquarters of Mungiki. They run the sprawling town. They issues decrees on certain days mostly geared towards controlling women. So on a certain day word spreads like brushfire that on Thursday no woman should be sighted in town wearing trousers. If they spot you, the mungiki slit your trousers into strips and you are left naked and in shame. I dont know why women are always the target of these illiterate militias worldwide. Boko Haram comes to mind. They also expect women to undergo the cut. That one is more of an in-house affair strictly for the daughters of Mumbi. (The Kiambu Governor comes to mind on this one). The police leave them to run amok. Anyway My Reluctant Other likes to take me out often when I am in the Republic. He knows the lay of the land and understands the inside story of his surroundings. So we go to Sopa for a meal and a drink by the fireplace. A waiter comes to serve us. While he is approaching my table, My Reluctant Other whispers to me that the fellow is a Mungiki. The guy comes to the table and gives me his back. He greets and only talks to MRO. He walks off after giving me a disdainful look and proceeds to get our orders. So MRO explains that Mungiki does not believe in shaking the hand of a woman or even being of service to one. I felt very uncomfortable because the no nonsense in me wants to react and tell him off, but I choose to ignore him mind enjoy the meal. So I wonder what foolishness is this. ? Why get into the service industry where you will have to serve women? But there is another story. Sopa is mainly frequented by Muhindis and Muzungus and other foreigners. Mungiki seem to have no problem with being of service to women from overseas. Maybe they see them as token men or they just have an inferiority complex. Now that we are left with domestic tourists, I wonder how this fellow and his ilk are going to fare
