European Court of Human Rights orders France to pay damages to Somali pirates: On the 4th of December 2014, in the Case of Ali Samatar and others v. France, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) found that France was in violation of the rights to freedom and security of five Somali pirates. The pirates had held French citizens hostages after seizing a French-flagged cruise ship and a French yacht in 2008. (bbc/news/world-europe-30326397) The Court took issue with the fact that the French authorities kept the pirates in custody for an additional 48 hours before bringing them before a judge, noting that nothing justifies such an additional delay. Though acknowledging the existence of completely exceptional circumstances surrounding the arrest- including the fact that it took place more than 6000 km from French territory- the Court said that French authorities should have brought the pirates before a judge the moment they arrived on French territory, ‘without delay. France was ordered to pay between 2000 and 5000 euros to each pirate for moral damages and amounts varying from 3000 to 9000 euros in order to cover legal costs.
