Even though i did not get to deliver my typed speech, here it is. 26/10/2013 Youth Leadership Development Programme Graduation Speech Directors of ceremony, Hon. Ben Amadhila, Youth Leadership Development Programme Patron, Mr. Michael Schultheiss, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Partner, Mr. Mandela Kapere Executive Chairperson of National Youth Council, Ms. Inge Neunda, YLDP Coordinator, ladies and gentlemen all protocol observed a beautiful good evening to you all. As introduced my name is Michael Amushelelo, a 22 year old entrepreneur, now most of you will wonder why a 22 year old is the motivational speaker for such an important gathering. Well who better to speak to youth leaders than a fellow youth who understand the difficulties and challenges we face as young leaders. I must admit writing my speech even though it is short; it took me quite some time to finish it. Dear graduates I am sure during the leadership programme you guys have learned a lot about what leadership is, so I will not bore you with, the definition, however for the interest of others, the dictionary defines a leadership as “the action of leading a group of people or an organization, or the ability to do this.” I also strongly believe that if you can inspire others to do great things than you are also a leader, as young people we should realize that our peers look up to us and it is our duty to have a meaningful impact on our fellow youth. What Namibia needs is young leaders to step up to the plate to meet the countries development goals. If we practically look at Vision 2030, with all due respect do you think Hon. Ben Amadhila or the senior leadership of this country will live long enough until the year 2030, I doubt, but yet they are the ones championing Vision 2030 now ask yourself why? Well the answer is easy; leaders put the people they represent before themselves. As youth leaders you should be prepared to sacrifice yourself for the sake of others. It is not an easy task to do, which is why we only have a handful of leaders. Vision 2030 is going to require a collective effort from every one of us, i have trust in our leaders and more especially we the future leaders of tomorrow, but as i always say in order to be a future leader you have to start today. Remember believing in yourself is the first step to greatness and i believe you are all great. What matters is how bad you want to achieve something, i have had to cut my sleeping hours to 3 hours per day, but i am not complaining, being an entrepreneur it is all about planting seeds and nurturing those seeds until they blossom into a tree one day. Success does not come as a result of one day’s work but a collective effort of many days’ works that finally pays off on one good day and you guys are surely living proof of this as you graduate today. I hope that the knowledge you have gained during the leadership development programme, does not only remain with you, because the true power of knowledge is sharing it and as I would say “Knowledge is useless unless shared.” Go out there and be great exemplary leaders. In my conclusion: I would like to quote Zig Ziglar If you can dream it, you can achieve it. You will get all you want in life if you help other people get what they want.
