Ever wonder why Jesus calls us sheep? By nature, sheep are helpless and gentle. Sheep don’t put up a fight — they depend very heavily on their shepherd for everything. That is the way we humans are to be. Jesus is our Shepherd. The shepherd leads his sheep to water. He tells them where to go. He even fights their battles against wild animals. He anoints their faces with oil to protect them. I think sheep are nosy (so are we) because they sometimes will wander off from their flock and get caught in bushes or even fall down into a ditch. That sounds like us. We aren’t content to stay together with Jesus leading us — we have to wander off and get ourselves into trouble. Then, Jesus has to come to rescue us (Matthew 18:10-14). We are told in another Scripture, John 10:27 that, “The shepherd knows every one of his sheep and they know him by his voice.” That’s exactly the way it is to be with us. We, as sheep, are to know our Shepherd’s voice. If one sheep is missing, the shepherd will leave all the other sheep to find the missing one. But because Jesus is omnipresent, He doesn’t have to leave any of us to find the one who may have gone astray. Did you realize that when one of the sheep breaks its leg, the shepherd picks him up and carries him around his neck to keep him safe? How many times has our Shepherd carried us? In Matthew 25:32-34, we read “and He separated them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on His left.” He will then say to the ones on the right hand, “come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” You may not know, but goats are very high spirited, independent and willful. They don’t want to listen to anybody. I’m trying to be more and more like a sheep, but I still have a lot of goat in me. How about you? You are so special!
