Every April, many universities and colleges celebrate undergraduate research activities. UNCW is no exception. The 9th annual Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creativity was held April 3-10, 2014, in conjunction with a celebration of graduate student research. Over 115 posters featuring faculty-mentored student research from business to biology were displayed in Randall Library. 15 UNCW Undergraduate Research Scholars were recognized, and three students were applauded as Distinguished Undergraduate Research Scholars because their work has been submitted to a scholarly journal for publication or because they won a Best Poster award at a national research meeting: Colleen Bove (senior in marine biology) Ben Shoesmith Zoe VanDerPloeg (seniors in economics) Our UNCW Distinguished Undergraduate Research Scholars are but one example of the proud tradition of discovery fostered at UNCW through the assistance of the Center for the Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CSURF) and the Honors College. Recently, several UNCW students, including Bove, presented their undergraduate research at the 12th Annual Colonial Academic Alliance Undergraduate Research Conference at the Towson University. Among the research topics addressed by UNCW researchers were: Colleen Bove, Marine Biology – Effects of Seawater pH on Coral Gastrovascular Chemistry Tate Devlin, Exercise Science- Rollers vs. Trainers: 10K Time Trials Fabian Rodriguez, Economics –The Spanish Stock Market Implied Volatility Index Other accolades go to Honors College students Tyler Gampp and Shea Volkel, UNCW sophomores who were recently awarded prestigious Ernest N. Hollings Scholarships from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and to Kaela Vogel, senior Honors student in marine biology, who was awarded a highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowship to attend a doctoral program at University of California-Davis next year. NSF received over 14,000 applications and made 2000 awards. It is often said that the strength of UNCW lies in our three enduring values – a commitment to the journey of learning, a love of place and an unshakable conviction in the power of ideas and innovation. The pursuit of knowledge and educational discovery through diligent undergraduate research touches all three of these values and produces Seahawk graduates ready to tackle any obstacles that may come their way.
