Excerpts from an interview with INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega - TopicsExpress

Excerpts from an interview with INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega earlier today (Sunday) The Electoral Officer in charge of Idemili North for some inexplicable reason messed up the distribution of electoral materials. He held some results sheets and in turn distributed false result sheets. Hence, the Electoral Officer and LGA Supervisor in charge of Idemili North have been handed over to the police We believe strongly that there was connivance between the EO and unknown agents to subvert the electoral process We are serious about this matter and whoever is responsible will be apprehended and handed over for prosecution. We need to collectively pay attention to people responsible for financially inducing Electoral Officers People did not utilize the opportunity to verify their registration as announced by INEC. The Electoral Act states that when a voter comes to the PU, you present your voters card to make sure your name is on the register. INEC should not be blamed for voters not utilizing the opportunity to verify their registration. If your name does not reflect on the register, the Law says you cannot vote Addendum Registers were not used for Anambra elections. By 2015, Addendum Registers will not be used all over the country The certified voters register was distributed to political parties to inspect and verify the names on the register. No political party communicated with INEC on the outcome of the inspection of the voters register given to them If you can prove that INEC is responsible for omitting your name, provide proof of the omission and the issue will be resolved Collation of LGA results has to be done after the elections in Obosi Ward 7. We cannot collate Idemili North results because Obosi is outstanding What remains is to finish Obosi, add it to the LGA results, then the State Collation Officer collates all the results ... The Electoral Act did not say elections cannot hold on certain days, but out of consideration you have to address sensitivities. But you have to create a balance between the costs and benefits for the voters in that LGA. We consulted with the community and got a consensus to proceed with the elections today. Majority of accredited representatives of political parties agreed to move the elections to today. Community leaders, including a member of the House of Representatives agreed the elections be held today Double registration is responsible for some peoples names getting omitted from the register. If a person registers in two locations, your name will be omitted from the register you did the second registration Before the CVR, sensitization and publicity was done and registers were displayed in Polling Units for verification. It was also announced at the stakeholders meeting in Awka on Wednesday that there was an SMS system for verification of registration - You send your first and last name with the last 5 digits on your voters card, you get a msg back with your registration details and PU The Accreditation in Obosi Ward was extended to 2pm so that people in church will be able to come out and vote My hope is that by this evening, results will be compiled and the Returning Officer will make announcements Nigerians should be rest assured that INEC will be much better in 2015 @newsbytesnow ...
