Exercise or relax when you’re sick? Its likely a tough - TopicsExpress

Exercise or relax when you’re sick? Its likely a tough call. Until recently, I always chose to work out when ill, the only exceptions were times when afflicted with a stomach bug or running a high fever. But I noticed head colds sometimes appeared to get worse, turning into chest congestion. Weights seem to be less of an issue, but the heavy breathing required for running appears to make respiratory infections worse. Last Thursday evening, I felt a sore throat coming on and by Friday nasal/sinus congestion had begun. I felt terribly stuffy and headachy all weekend. Maybe it’s because I’ll be 40 in less than a week that I chose to relax (as much as possible) and took the old adage “feed a cold” seriously – a box of Chips Ahoy cookies, 4 or 5 bagels, a few donuts, a large bag of Barnum’s Animal Crackers, around a half dozen cans of Campbell’s soup (a years sodium intake), and a bunch of Reese’s Pieces, were amongst the morsels I consumed in my attempt to feed my cold. I missed Monday’s workout as well as my weekend workouts, but hit the weights and treadmill for intervals bright and early this morning. A little tired – but felt ok. For those of you who work out on a regular basis, when do trudge through an illness and when do you decide it’s time to refrain from your scheduled workout?
