Extra Kwazvose sizzles under Slomo ENTERTAINMENT WRITER • 9 DECEMBER 2014 HARARE - After the recent departure of drummer Obert Gomba, lead guitarist Noel Nyazanda and Congolese chanter Jonasi Kasamba from Extra Kwazvose, it was not surprising that the group’s weekend concert attracted unuasual interest. Scores of fans packed Marandure Night Club in Mt Hampden last Friday eager to see if the new Extra Kwazvose leader Franco “Slomo” Dhaka would live up to expectations at the helm of the sungura band. The animated sungura fans, who never stopped dancing all night, went home a happy lot and convinced that Extra Kwazvose was still very much alive. Franco Slomo — a former member of Alick Macheso’s Orchestra Mberikwazvo and Suluman Chimbetu’s Orchestra Dendera Kings, gave a polished and energetic act which left fans calling for more. He performed songs off Extra Kwazvose’s two albums Ndizvo Zviripo and Zvepasirino. The songs that kept the dance floor busy included Gurajena, Mai vaBhoni, Thelma and Ruvarashe. The new Extra Kwazvose leader also took the opportunity to sample new tracks that would feature on his forthcoming album. Franco Slomo told the Daily News that he plans to drop the new album in the first quarter of next year. “I have a number of songs that can make up not only one album but several. Fans should expect the new album early next year, most probably in March,” he said. Dhaka, though added, that the forthcoming album was not his immediate priority for now. “I am currently touring the country with the intention of letting Extra Kwazvose fans know that I am now totally in charge of the band,” said veteran dancer-cum-singer who has already taken Extra Kwazvose to Karoi and Kariba. “Next weekend we will be performing at Dzonzai Night Club in Chipinge before doing another show at Checheche town during the same weekend.” John Murira, the group’s publicist, is also upbeat about Extra Kwazvose’s prospects in the competitive sungura genre. “I am glad that everywhere we go fans are appreciating our music. We are currently touring the country because we are aware that we command a huge following in some parts of the country not just in Harare,” said Murira
