THE AMERICAN UNIVERSITY IN CAIRO Dr. Lisa Anderson President The American University in Cairo Dear Dr. Anderson We met briefly in NYC. I am a totally devoted graduate of AUC and one of the Universitys proudest graduates. I owe the institution so much-- best thing that ever happened to me. I am also, as you might know, a recognized multiple-award professional American Journalist with 40 years of experience that includes well over two decades at The New York Times and one at The Wall Street Journal. I owe much of this to having been at AUC. I am also an iron-clad believer in Freedom of the Press , regardless of risk, which over the years adds up to a few serious tussles in Libya, Iraq, Iran and among Palestinians. So what is the problem? Allowing, or more accurately continuing to allow, a professor who clearly seems to be a strong adherent of the Muslim Brotherhood organization, Dr. Emad Shahin, is not in the best interest of AUC. Being politically correct does not work to your -- our?-- advantage, in this case. I was a Sophomore At AUC , when MONA ABDELNASSER, second daughter of president Gamal Abdelnasser joined our University back in 1962-3 (pl. check) . Thomas Bartlett was our president, (pls check that too). I was very politically-active , and you certainly can check that too : i.e. (Editor-in-chief , and Founder, of the Caravan our campus newspaper; head of the Arab Socialist Union Chapter of the AUC, head of the Student Union) altogether To put it bluntly, i was without any question in the limelight, and inevitably, very much under the secret police watch. Many at AUC have been and continue to be to this day, as you well know. I always thought the head of AUC was in one way or another a CIA connected person. So, let us say this is a conversation between folks who know the game. This fellow, Shahin, bothers me, even knowing all of the above. Emad Shahin, is being used for a purpose? His access to my other alma matter, the NYTimes, especially their extraordinarily naive man, David Kirkpatrick, is disturbing. The damage is being done on the front pages of the NYTimes. I understand there are other interests, but somehow, AUC comes up here as a personal, very dear, one. Please stop it. This guy is not worth whatever we, the CIA, FBI, US Embassy, are using him for. He is doing far too much damage. Kirpatrick is an idiot. They come and go, God knows i have been in the NYTimes long enough to tell you. He is deeply harming Egypt. He is definitely a Muslim Brotherhood operative. Check it out, please. Otherwise AUC is paying the price. Everyone uses AUC. Most of the time , it is actually OK. But once in a while, like with Emad Shahin The question is when to say No. Check out his real background. He has moved about a lot. As a security person, i would wonder.
