FACTS ABOUT THE BURJ KHALIFA The Burj Khalifa is so tall the sun appears to set several minutes later on the top floor. This even affects fasting in Ramadan. The Burj Khalifa is 2,716.5 feet high and 160 stories. It is the tallest building in the world and has the longest elevator in the world. It has the highest “occupied floor” of any building. It has several residences as well as a hotel and is located in Dubai. Interestingly, it is so tall that people at the top of the tower see the sunrise a full two minutes after those on the ground see it. Because of their different angle from the earth, the son appears to go down just slightly later. To a lot of people this might seem an insignificant difference, but to Muslims fasting for Ramadan, it does matter. Clerics of Muslim law have decided that Muslims living up higher do have to fast for two minutes longer. They must fast from dawn to dusk, no matter if dusk comes slightly later. And, regardless of who you are, it would be fun to see the sunset twice in an evening. All you would have to do is see it first on the ground, and then hurry up in the elevator to the top floor to see it all over again!
