FAMILY GENEALOGY.. Dedicated to the young members of our clan By Oscar Moreno Reciña on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 4:55pm Our common ancestors were APO MAAMA or DATU DALABAHAN, Chieftain of the Bukinon Tribe and his wife, APO BAHE. (maama, binukid terminology, means man in english while bahe means woman) They were born sometime in middle of the 19th Century. Apo Maama came from Casisang, a community south of the poblacion of Malaybalay then and Apo Bahe from Lumayagan, now a part of Kalasungay located on the northern end of the then barrio. I learned from my elders that Apo Maama was a magahat or a warrior who was fierce and brave. He had strong qualities of leadership and was willing to kill. This trait during those days was necessary in order to survive because what prevailed was the law of the jungle. There were no laws but those of the ways of the tribe were troubles were settled by the sword and the spear. So as a young men, his ability to fight and defend his family was legendary. He was tall--about close to six feet tall and stocky. His hands were large such that his bolo was big and heavy. Not one of his sons dared to hold it. So, having the character to command and be obeyed, he was bestowed the title of DATU by the tribe. Thus, began the life of DATU DALABAHAN. I do not know the meaning of his name. I simply forgot to ask my elders. But in the tribe, each name had a meaning. Boys and girls were given first names only. There was no family name. So if a young man were named Mabalow, he is brave because this is what the word means in the English language. And if young woman is named Maragway she is beautiful for the same reason. So if we ask the question, did Datu Dalabahan kill someone, the answer has to be a yes. Again, this is unavoidable otherwise he could not have been a leader. This is true if marauders--like raiders would raid his village to pillage and abduct the women and children to become slaves. He had to lead the men and repulse the attack. APO BAHE was born in the village of Lumayagan--the first settlement of Kalasungay. This area was then in the middle of a forest with a small part that was marshy. In the marsh, the women gathered reeds to be woven into mats. They also planted rice on the area for the sustenance of the tribe. When the village was plagued by disease--dengue--the entire village was nearly wiped out. So, the survivors transferred to Lagonglong near Sawaga River gradually moving to its present site along the national highway. That makes Kalasungay the permanent site. Because the survivors all came from one village--all of them were relatives. Marriage was arranged by the elders and Datu. There was no courtship. (Sorry folks but there was no love,,,unlike today, hehehe). Present day Kalasungay is in fact is still about 99% relatives. In fact, I was prevented by this thing from having a girlfriend from the then barrio because the parents of the girl would tell me that she is my distant cousin. Sayang. I eyed about two young maidens when I was very much younger.. So APO MAAMA and APO BAHE in their youth were betrothed under the rites of the tribe by their parents and the Datu. The ritual called for the butchering of a pig and chicken the same way a Pamuhat ritual is done today but more elaborate. The new couple settled in Kalasungay. With the coming of the Spanish conquistadores, a census was conducted by Governor General Polavieha and all the indigenous peoples were baptized and given Spanish names. Thus, Apo Maama was baptized as ELENO RECINA and Apo Bahe as JOSEFA ANDALEGO (this was, by the way done, before they were married under the rites of the church).
