FB During a time when so many of America’s African American children’s lives seem to have very little value for some senseless people, along comes the Jackie Robinson West baseball team with a priceless price tag. This team of youngsters should make all of us reflect and do our part to help end the senseless killings. More importantly, it should serve as evidence that we need to invest more in the future of every child in Illinois. The proof is in the Jackie Robinson West baseball team - that when given a fair opportunity to prepare to compete, every child can achieve greatness. The Jackie Robinson West baseball team is a symbol of hope, encouraging the many children in Illinois who are hard workers with discipline and leadership skills. Children all over Illinois are looking for parents, business owners, government leaders, teachers, and people like Manager Darold Butler, Coach Jerry Houston, and Coach Jason Little to believe in them. Someone to believe in them enough to take the time to love and teach them that hard work really pays off. The manager, coaches, and the players have represented Illinois well. We cannot let their example be wasted or forgotten; we must get our priorities in order if we are serious about stopping the destruction of our communities and senseless killings of children. We remember the struggles the team had to confront to pay for travel to play in the games. Illinois’ professional teams, business community, and Illinois Board of Higher Education should come together and reward each of Jackie Robinson West’s players with a guarantee of a scholarship to college.
