FEEL GOOD FRIDAY By Kelvin Kariuki Living Life with Gusto Sometimes its the same moments that take your breath away that breathe purpose and love back into your life. ~Steve Maraboli There are some things that happen to us, that are great gifts - but they come once or infrequently. Have you ever read something and it really spoke to you, met a person and was touched by their story or comment or had a life-adjusting moment? I dont think these things are accidents. I cant physically prove that they are or they arent but I see them happen in my life, to me, and to others. It is very exciting and brings hope to us. During my internship, I had a very interesting and joyful office-mate. It gave me joy to walk into the office every morning and receive a reply of Im Beautiful!! whenever I asked how he is doing. That statement unconsciously made me aware of the beauty that lies in everything and everyone around me. I began to take note of the goodness of every situation before I begin to criticize. Moments like this lovely start to a busy day are what I consider hopeful moments. Take for example, a fisherman who goes out to the lake (or river, or ocean) at dawn, every dawn, with the hope of catching fish that will either be food for the family or a means to earn a living. He is not guaranteed of getting a huge catch at any one time...but it is hope and determination that gets him sailing every single day. Such is the case with a farmer. At the onset of rain, he or she will prepare his farm for planting, not knowing whether or not the rains will last. A good yield or catch day to a farmer and a fisherman are pretty much considered gifts. When the things around you are seen as gifts, they are no longer a means to an end; they are the means AND the end. And thus, a cow-herder will tend to his animals with the compassion of a father, a village woman will wait three hours for a delayed bus without a trace of anger and a child will spend countless hours fascinated by stars in the galaxy. As I am learning, a farmer would explain it to you this way: You cannot make the clouds rain more; you cannot make the sun shine less. They are just natures gifts - take it or leave it. Take care of those moments when they come. Take care of them by being aware. I have found that when I am complaining or worried I break myself off from learning and the great things of the moment around me. This is part of the work I do, alone, in life. You and I cant wait for others to make us a life. We cant wait for our siblings to, our parents to, our friends to, our boss to or anyone to give us the moments that move and bring joy to us. Not always. Life is about others coming through for us and most of our great joys involve others but we set up our hearts and minds for meaningful experiences by taking care of the moment and lessons that come to us.
