FILM FESTIVAL CIRCUIT… (“99% of Festivals are Useless! The top 15 Fall/2013 Important Festivals… Enter. Get Discovered.”) (For all “Free” 422 Filmmaking Tips, Contacts & Updates go to “MOVIE CLOUD” & “LIKE”)…………………..(August 19, 2013) …………………………………………………………………… Film Festivals, for filmmakers with their first feature film, exist for one reason and one reason only…and it ain’t anything to do with festivals being a cultural event or filmmaking being an alleged art form. Film festivals, for filmmakers, exist for the opportunity to either be (A) Discovered, or (B) get a Distributor or (C) Sell his/her film. Discovered….Distributor…Sell…these three things are all basically the same. Now, who is going to (A) Discover you or (B) be your Distributor and/or (C) Buy your film? The answer is a Distributor. But a distributor is a non-emotional corporate entity…then the question becomes who, a person that works for the distributor, is the individual that makes the decision to Buy Your Film and has the Authority to Give You A Bank Check? Distributors like Miramax, Weinsteins, Summit, Lionsgate, Samuel Goldwyn, are busy making and distributing their own feature films every month but they do know that INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS, people like you, take your own money or friends money or private placement money or crowd funded money and make a feature film. Obviously you make this feature film with very little overhead, very few, if any guild and union affiliations and then end product is you have made a movie very-very-very cheaply, “independent of the film industry”, for a Distributor to see and hopefully purchase or distribute. Now from the distributors POV they love this. “WHY?” Answer: “You have made a movie for FREE for them to watch and possibly distribute.” I hope you heard the word FREE. When you are an independent you use your own money or crowd money or a small group of investor’s money, not a Distributor’s money. To make a movie for the Distributor to view…and if they love it, for whatever reason they will buy it from you, literally at a Film festival, where you are broke and begging, and they, the distributor, has just gotten an excellent deal. Now let’s chat Film Festivals….and the alleged circuit or route. 25 Years ago I don’t think you could name 15 Film festivals in the entire world. Go ahead try (Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, Berlin, Venica, Telluride…) Bet you are starting to run out of festivals…bet you can’t name 15 that existed 25 years ago and still exists today. 25 years ago there were maybe 15 Film Festivals in the entire world…. Today there are 2,000-3,000 Film Festivals. Wow! So let’s chat festival circuit. Distributors have an employee whose title is “Acquisition Executive”… They acquire (aka: buy) independent films. Plus, they DO NOT ATTEND 2,000-3,000 Festivals every year. This is not possible. In reality they only go to 12-15 per year. Now, assuming you’re ready with your finished film…let me put together a route for the remainder of 2013 for Film Festivals where acquisition executives go…. 1) LOCARNO (Aug 7-17) 2) VENICE (Aug 28-Sep 7) 3) TELLURIDE (Aug 29 – Sep 2) 4) TORONTO (Sep 5-15) 5) SAN SEBASTIAN (Sep 20-26) 6) RAINDANCE (Sep 25 – Oct 6) 7) RIO (Sep 26 –Oct 10) BUSAN (Oct 3-12) 9) LYON LUMIERE (Oct 14-20) 10) TOKYO (Oct 12-25) 11) ABU DHABI (Oct 22 – Nov 2) 12) AFI (Nov 7-14) 13) ROME (Nov 8-17) 14) VENTANA SUR (Dec 3-6) 15) DUBAI (Dec 6-14) There it is. The Fall 2013 Film Festival circuit of film festivals where you actually have a chance of (A) being discovered and (B) getting a Distributor and (C) selling your film.
