FORGET ME NOT One day I went visit my parents. My mom said, “Son your father is troubled, and he won’t tell me for what.” So I went to speak with him, to find the answer she sought. I walked into the room where he sat; the look on his face was of such despair. Such an aura of sadness filled the room as in the darkness he stared. So as I gently touched his shoulder in a whisper I asked what troubled him so. With a tear in his eye he said, “My son I am afraid, I am afraid not to KNOW…” “Not to know of my children, my grandchildren, my brothers, my sisters, my parents, not even my wife.” “Not to know of my journey, or the love of my life.” “I don’t want to forget you son, nor those that I love and the things that I know.” “I don’t want to be a blank page with no memories to have, nor feelings to show.” My father was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s his fears were genuine. My heart was saddened and touched, my father’s feelings so loving and sublime. I knelt by his chair and looked in his eyes, to tell him we will love him beyond the end of time. But before I could say it, before a word out I got. He looked in my eyes and said, “Son forget me not.” There was a lump in my throat. My voice quivered as I began to reply. I struggled to fight back the tears. I did not want to let my father see me cry. I said, “Father we will not forget you. You will always be in our heart.” “Whether near are far, whether sound or not, we will remember you always no matter what.” My father is gone now, Alzheimer’s took his life. His last years were hard, full of pain and strife. There is a hole in our hearts like the winter cold; it will stay with us always until we grow old. One thing’s for certain, we will share his memory and the love that he brought. Just as promised, my dear Father, we will forget you not. poema by Rico Perez, 2014
