FROM THE NEWSROOM: Following statements by Republican candidate for Connecticut’s 2nd Congressional District Lori Hopkins Cavanagh, who expressed mixed feelings about recreational marijuana legalization, but fervently supported its medical use, we spoke with Democratic incumbent Joe Courtney who supports leaving this issue up to individual states. “I’m somebody who thinks the federal government should allow states to run their own jurisdictions as far as issues like drug enforcement,” the U.S. Congressman said. He praised the Department of Justice for stepping back when it comes to the marijuana issue. Responding to Cavanagh’s opposition to imposing what she called a “sin tax” on marijuana, Courtney said he disagrees, saying the concept of the excise tax has been around since the inception of the country, and they are useful for offsetting costs for schools, law enforcement and healthcare that can be subject to a “ripple effect” from legalization. Courtney added that excise taxes also discourage damaging behavior, saying it’s important that the youth understand marijuana is not a healthy lifestyle choice. Tune in for the full report.
