FROM THE NEWSROOM: Killinglys $25 million Sewer Plant Renovation - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: Killinglys $25 million Sewer Plant Renovation Project is set to begin in spring of 2015 if the towns tax payers allow the town to bond the project. Chairman of the Town Council, John Hallbergh said there will be a Town Meeting and Public Hearing held on August 19th followed by a machine vote on September 9th. The proposed Clean Water Act Fund will cover 20% of the project, with the other 80% funded through loans with a fixed 2% interest over the next 20 years, starting in the fiscal year 2019. Sewer users rates will also increase by 12.5% every year for four consecutive years. Because tax payers will be affected, Hallberg said its important that they understand the project fully, including the reasons the Town Council finds it necessary. “A good running sewer plant is an asset to the whole town,” he stated. He explained that it brings business and industries into the town, which “pays a larger amount of taxes than a residential tax payer.” Hallbergh also mentioned that the 42-year-old plant is outdated and has old equipment that needs upgrading. He said if the town lets it deteriorate further, it could be fined heavily for not being up to code. Tune in for the full report.
