Facebook reminds me a lot of a social psychology exercise we did back in college. There is a theory called sociometry. Basically, it states that if you make contact through seven or so layers of friends, you could find a path to contact anyone in the world. In class we did it out to four layers just from the people in the class of about forty people. Even with such a small group, we had names and numbers of some famous people and the list of contacts were approaching a million people.
