Fifty years ago this week, on October 15, 1964, it was announced in Moscow that the anti-Stalinist, reform-minded Soviet leader Nikita S. Khrushchev had been removed from office. He was succeeded as premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) by Alexei N. Kosygin and as the countrys Communist Party secretary by hardliner Leonid I. Brezhnev -- the latter who would eventually dominate.
