Folks have written a little on how Foley went out, and how they would have been more aggressive, or made a scene of it. Hopefully that would be the case, but Im not convinced it would be. I used to carry two frags in Afghanistan, one for them and one for me. Last thing I wanted was for me or my brothers to die, but goddamn it, Id rather rock out than punk out and get caught. That being said, I wonder what Foleys overall state of mind was. Odds are it was somewhere most of us cant well imagine. Id like to say that Id be all hard and yell about bacon and the Constitution before they put me down, but I cant honestly say that I would. I hope I would, but I look at it from the perspective of having seen dudes that were ostensibly hard-asses, freezing up once the first round snapped past their head. Looking at them, youd never guess that they were going to be that guy. Please note that Im not comparing anyone in particular to those folks, Im just saying. Often times our reactions arent as hardcore as we think they would be. When you throw extended physical and psychological abuse into the mix, Im not willing to judge. All I can fairly say is that I hope I would be in a better state of mind, angry and defiant, if my life brought me to a place like that.
