Following a debate with a colleague about high intensity cardio vs low/moderate intensity (fat burning) here is my advice. Many people get confused with the fat burning zone principle and I often see people come to the gym After work and spend 90% of there workout doing a hill walk. Fat burning is a great way to burn fats while maintaining muscle especially while doing a low carb diet. The theory behind it is while your body is working at this intensity it will use fats as its primary fuel source. Its not an exact science and in my opinion should be done only at the end of your workout when your carbs are depleted or on a morning first thing before breakfast (fasted cardio). High intense cardio, intervals especially is a great way to burn calories in a shorter space of time and although your body will use a lot of carbs as its primary fuel source it will still burn fat. Now deciding which is best for you isnt rocket science. Anyone looking to shed a lot of weight with a more limited time frame my advice would be do a higher portion of intervals and a lower portion of fat burning. Someone who enjoys abit more time in the gym or has more time to spend in the gym might opt for a higher portion of fat burning providing its done at the correct times. Fat burning tends to favour the bodybuilding approach of training of high muscle mass low body fat. this does not mean you have to be a bodybuilder to see the gains but I would argue this training approach caters towards a more asethetic result. The higher intensity approach would be for someone looking to either improve there fitness or shed access weight quickly. Sometimes there are no right or wrong answers to training its what works best for you.... You decide!
