Food safety campaign targets Super Bowl halftime 01/29/2014 04:08:00 PM Coral Beach Halftime of Super Bowl XLVIII is being promoted as the perfect time to practice food safety at home by federal agencies that have launched a campaign using the run up to game day as an opportunity to remind the public about how to reduce foodborne illnesses. “Halftime is a good rule of thumb for replacing or tossing buffet items” that have been sitting out since kickoff, according to a news release from the Ad Council. The council is working with the Food and Drug Administration, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to raise public awareness about food safety and small steps that can have a big impact. Billed by the National Football League as “the most-watched musical event of the year,” the Super Bowl halftime show attracted 110.5 million viewers in 2013, according to the NFL. That makes it an effective talking point for reminding the public about safe food practices, according to the Ad Council release. Also participating in the campaign is the Food Network’s “World Extreme Chef” winner, Terry French, who is described by the Ad Council as having a “rock ’n’ roll approach to food.” “I like to live on the wild side, but not when it comes to food safety,” French said in the release. “With just a few simple steps and additional prep, you can have an amazing Super Bowl feast and not have to worry about foodborne illness ruining the party.” The multi-agency campaign is encouraging the public to use tips on the government’s food safety website at foodsafety and to call the USDA’s Meat and Poultry hotline on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. EST toll-free at 888-674-6854.
