For Immediate Release October 4, 2013 COALITION OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS TO HOST FUNERAL TO BURY VIOLENCE IN NEWARK OCTOBER 27, 2013 Newark, NJ – In response to the unrelenting violence taking place daily in Newark, a coalition of community-based organizations, community leaders, funeral homes, and local small businesses was formed to bring every neighborhood together at one time to bury the violence with a mock funeral called “The Funeral to Bury Violence in Newark” (The Funeral). 211 Community Impact is the lead organization for this event. Inspired by an impromptu conversation, Dupre`Kelly, member the legendary hip-hop group Lords of the Underground, CEO of 211 MG and Cofounder /Chair of 211 Ci, brought this unprecedented group together to organize the largest symbolic stand against the many forms of violence attacking Newark’s children and communities. The purpose of this event is to magnify the impact that the senseless violence and killing surging through Newark has on every member of the community and to bring a message of community healing and renewal. The Funeral targets the diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural groups that make up Newark, as well as the cities that border Newark. The organizing committee also welcomes the participation of individuals and organizations at a national level committed to 1) a serious public dialogue addressing the root causes of violence in Newark and other impacted communities and 2) building and promoting a positive campaign about Newark, its residents, and its many assets. We anticipate the participation of at least 6,000 concerned citizens who want to see peace take over our streets. The Funeral is being held on October 27, 2013. It includes five funeral processions, one leaving from each ward of Newark, that come together at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for the The Funeral service. Each procession will begin at 11:00am, follow a predetermined route, be led by a team of event organizers and funeral directors, and travel with police escorts. The funeral service will begin at 1:00pm and end at 4:30pm. The funeral service will begin at 1:00pm and end at 4:30pm. The service will consist of youth speakers, remarks from leaders of community organizations, impact statement from victims’ families, readings from the Bible and the Quran, a prayer in Spanish, and tributes from local choirs and singers. There have been many rallies and dedications, as well as countless funerals. However, The Funeral will symbolically put violence to rest with one of the biggest funerals Newark and surrounding cities will ever see. Celebrities scheduled for attendance includes: Shaquille O’Neal, Lords of The Underground, Redman, Naughty by Nature, Mike Bivins, Mr. Cheeks, Rah Digga, JD Williams, Hakim of Channel Live, Ed Lover and a host of others. Members of the coalition include 211 Community Impact, Newark Anti-Violence Coalition, FP YouthOutcry, 24 Hours of Peace, Anti-Industry Entertainment, Stop Shootin Music, and West Ward Economic Development Corporation. Participating funeral homes include: Perry Funeral Home, Woody Home for Services, Chapels of Edan Funeral Home, J. E. Churman Funeral Home, Cotton Funeral Services, Cushnie-Houston Funeral Home and Morticians Who Care.
