For folks who dont understand how serious this disease is, you can share this too. So many people dont understand how important this little butterfly shaped gland in our neck is. If your thyroid is removed, you will eventually die without the hormone replacement. Most docs say by week 3 youre in danger of being in a coma with death not far off. So imagine a gland thats been destroyed by antibodies, theres not much left (if any) of it functioning. We are dependent on thyroid medication to sustain life for this damaged gland that cant do its job anymore. The majority of thyroid dysfunction/hypothyroidism is from an autoimmune disease called Hashimotos disease. Thats where the antibodies come from. They see the thyroid gland as a foreign invader in the body and send the antibodies to attack it. Thats a short explanation, but one that may help people to understand that this disease is not to be joked about, made fun of, or taken lightly. Ever.
