For many years now, I have been blessed with a schedule that allows me to forego the maddening task of driving during rush hour. Today, on a normally short and uneventful drive to the grocery store, I was reminded of just how lucky I have been. As I sat there screaming obscenities at the commuters between myself and the glowing sign of the grocery store promising me salvation, I gestured wildly at the green light 15 stopped cars ahead of me and remembered back to a time long ago. Back to a time when my morning and evening commutes coincided with those of the majority of the workforce. Back to a time when, crawling along, bumper to bumper, like ants in a crowded tunnel, I felt a sense of camaraderie toward the other sufferers of daytime commute. To a time when AM radio talk shows and soothing evening tunes kept me from jerking my steering wheel and slamming on the gas pedal to clear a way through the eternal line of vehicles painstakingly making their way slowly toward a miserable 8 hours in a cubicle with no windows. Today, I commended myself for that self restraint I once had as I jerked my wheel and slammed on the gas pedal, plowing my way through a neverending line of office workers crawling their way home to eat dinner and turn into zombies in front of their TVs. Aint nobody got time for that.
