For reasons beyond our control, the Atencion left out the announcement that we are having Liliana Martinez Calderon, A local Mexican activist, speak at our meeting. Please come. The MORENA Party. Who Are They? Occupy San Miguel features Liliana Martinez Calderon representing Morena, the new left political party in Mexico on Monday, May 19 at 1 PM in the TV room of the Quinta Loreto Hotel, Loreto 15, in Centro. Born in Mexico City and raised in San Miguel de Allende, Ms. Martinez studied accounting at Tec de Monterrey Campus Querétaro. While in college, she worked with indigenous family companies in Oaxaca to help them price their products correctly and reduce their costs of production. After graduating with honors, she worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers and then decided to open her own firm in San Miguel de Allende. She is a volunteer with the school for the deaf (Escuela de Educación Especial de San Miguel de Allende, A.C.) and has served as their treasurer and interim director of the school. For the past 8 years, she has volunteered on campaigns for former mayor of Mexico City and presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador and has been actively involved in the formation of MORENA and their efforts against the PRI political reforms. “For over 30 years, the government has plundered the nation’s goods and deprived all Mexicans from their rights, “ says Ms. Martinez. “Before 1936, foreign companies were the owners of the oil in Mexico. They didn’t pay taxes and gave poor salaries to their employees. Oil is the main source of income in Mexico. If Mexico allows investment, mainly from foreign companies, it will lose more than one third of its budget. If we allow the government to privatize oil, Mexico will see an increase in poverty, violence and taxes. The proof of this is the price of gas right now – it is higher than in the US.” She points out that all the nation’s industries have been privatized to either national or foreign companies. “A good example is Telmex, a company that was given to Carlos Slim causing the telephone service in Mexico to be one of the most expensive in the world. This also created one of the richest men alive,” she says. “Another example is the banking system which crashed in the early 90’s and had to be rescued by the government, creating a debt for every single Mexican. Other privatized and failed industries in Mexico are: highways, trains, electricity, ports, airports and airlines.” Her talk will be followed by a discussion. There is no charge.
