[For those familiar with “The Red Book” the passage in this letter to Frances G. Wickes stating “They apparently worship the sun. But it isnt the sun, it is the moment of dawn: that is God.” Brings to mind the profoundly beautiful passages about “Phanes” in “The Red Book” which may be found at the link at the bottom of this post.] To Frances G. Wickes My Dear Mrs. Wickes, Sils-Maria, Engadin, 9 August 1926 I feel profoundly moved by the bad news about your health, especially the matter with your eyesight. You want me to tell you something about Africa. You know, that is not easy at all. There is too much to tell and that would not be much worthwhile, and then there are a few things and I dont know exactly what to say about them. The one is the fact that we discovered a new form of a very primitive psychological religion with the tribes on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, where nobody advised us to go. They apparently worship the sun. But it isnt the sun, it is the moment of dawn: that is God. I think its rather amazing. It is the origin of the Egyptian Horus idea. The other thing is how Africa affects oneself. That latter point is not yet fully worked out. I had no time to think. But I am going to. For the time being I have finished some old papers. Patients eat me. But my resistances against them are gathering like thunderclouds. I should write much. I have not said yet all I ought to. I remain with my warmest wishes for your health, Yours sincerely, C.G. Jung carljungdepthpsychology.blogspot/2013/01/phanes-is-god-who-rises-agleam-from.html
