For those of you who didnt get an opportunity to see this fitting tribute to a PHENOMENAL WOMAN - MAYA ANGELOU. I found this online. I was at a friends funeral years ago and someone read the poem Phenomenal Woman, I sat there and I remember saying to my late husband whow who wrote that and it bugged me so much because I wanted to know more about the writer and their works. So when I got home I put a search in online. Thats when I started to read her life story as well as watch her numerous interviews on tv (especially with Oprah Winfery ) I used to think look what this woman has been through as well as accomplished and yet she sits there so refine and humble. She also had this ore around her which touched peoples as well as my life. Especially from the day I heard her poem in that church. Listening to what she had to say so many time, it taught me several things. One never forget the struggle that our ancestor and our fore Fathers have been through to make our future / world a better place for us all, and take what they have achieve and build on it, so that not only our children but their children can also have a better legacy. By encouraging them to learn, educate themselves and minds through school so that are able to face negativity and turn that negativity into something positive. She also taught me that its ok to say no if you feel it is not right. and if faced with a challenge you have that right to turn round to that other person and say if you want me to jump show me how high and I STILL HAVE THE CHIOCE whether I want to do it or not. She taught me that you can go through abuse (whether physical or mental abuse) and you can come out of it the other side and you can use that experience and turn it into a positive not only to heal spiritually but also help other. Has I said listening to this woman speak she taught me a lot. Whilst I was growing up I sometimes used to feel that I didnt fit in has a young Black girl / Woman or I wasnt one of the in crowd. But when I heard that poem that day, I realized that I didnt have to be, I did not have to lose my identity to be accepted. What I had to be was true to MYSELF firstly, before I could be true to my children and to this society / world in which I live. I thank people like Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr, Mary Seacole, Rosa Parks and so many others for being positive role models and who stood / face the challenges to make a difference. Yes the fight will always go on to make a positive change / difference, but I know thanks to them, I am able and my children are able to go to schools / colleges and have an education and go further if they so wish, be able to sit any where on a bus with out any repercussions, I can challenge negativity whether it is within or outside of my cultural upbringing and so much more. Finally I think what has always stood out as well as hit me about Maya Angelou is that with everything that she faced through adversity / diversity, she always seem to deal with it in a calm yet solid way and kept her integrity intact. She will be sadly missed by her family and loved ones. But the world has also lost a shining light. RIP Maya Angelou xxxx
