For those of you who have recently started lessons, are starting lessons soon, or may be interested in taking lessons in the future, let me tell you a bit about St Albert Music Instruction... My name is Gary, and Im a Scotsman. I studied music for seven years in university, attaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in music performance, then a Post-Graduate Diploma in jazz music performance and light music from Edinburghs Napier University. I toured Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Wales with rock and blues groups, and have performed internationally in France, Denmark, Tunisia, India, and of course Canada, in various musical styles. I have recorded for the BBC, and on a number of albums as a session musician, and I have taught music in colleges and schools, from 2003-2010. In 2010, I moved from Glasgow, Scotland to St Albert with my wife, and in 2011, began teaching music lessons from my home. One of my goals with music is to create and contribute towards community, and in addition to playing in various events groups and rock bands, Ive organised ukulele jams, street-busking sessions and even a serving group to play for seniors homes and special needs facilities. Instead of hosting formal recitals for my students to play at, I encourage them to play with our community music group, and learn the value of volunteering and serving a very appreciative audience. The students have the opportunity to play with a diverse group of musicians in the group. We have construction workers, secretaries, university lecturers and even a former Edmonton Symphony Orchestra member, all with the common goal of bringing joy to the community we have been placed in. All proceeds of our concerts go to the Stollery Childrens Hospital. As an academic music graduate, I place an emphasis on music theory and reading, and as a jazz musician, I encourage improvisation and knowledge of a wide variety of musical styles on all of the instruments I teach. I have students in guitar, bass guitar, upright bass, ukulele, mandolin and beginners banjo. I am an advocate of life-long learning, and every year I strive to learn a new instrument. In 2015, I plan to take up the bagpipes...well see if my neighbors offer any objection! Perhaps theyll enjoy it. Despite being a busy working musician, I really enjoy teaching, and I currently teach around thirty students. I enjoy helping them find their musical voice, and teaching them the value of being a contributor to the community around them through the medium of music. If you have any questions about my availability as a player or teacher, e-mail me at gglewinski@hotmail Many thanks, Gary
