For those who dont know, the 21-year old was my dad and the other my grandpa.... 50 Years Ago From the East Oregonian Sept. 1-2, 1964 As time passes, Indian arts and lore sometimes are lost because of modern ways, but one of them is being preserved here on the Umatilla Reservation — all because a group of young men went huckleberry hunting Sunday and wound up shooting a big bear. The bear was felled by 21-year-old Walter Broncheau with a single shot. It was decided to barbecue the animal on the Louis McFarland place. The fire is piled high with rocks as the ladies cut the bear meat into huge chunks. The chunks are then placed on the hot rocks on top of a layer of alder wood and then covered with fir boughs, alder leaves and ferns to add flavor. After cooking all night the tender meat is removed from the fire and the feast begins. Annie Johnson, one of the oldest of the Indian women, supervised a willing crew of Indians in the affair.
