For your consideration: Since the age of 12, I have been the butt - TopicsExpress

For your consideration: Since the age of 12, I have been the butt of jokes, ridiculed, and mocked about of how I act. While I dont traditionally concern myself with the jeers that we all may have received during adolescence, I find that I have continued to face the same problem in high school, college, and now in my professional life. Because I dont know the latest African American movie, music, style, or (at times), subscribe to the same thoughts, or taste, I am acting outside of my race and culture (acting white). Somehow I thought that at the age of 32 years old, working on my doctorate degree having a successful professional life that would be enough. Apparently not. While on some level, it deeply bothers me to still be at this point, because it effects my friendships and dating life. What concerns me most, it that this mentality suggests that I am not allowed to have my own beliefs, my own interest, different that of my race. Moreover, being this Erica has gotten me in every door that I have wanted to enter--educationally and professionally. Admittedly, I feel disappointed and weary to continuously have to fight with others on this front. Yes, there are some movies I have never seen all the way through that are a part of classic African-American cinema. I guess I will be fighting this battle for another 10 years...confessions of a middle-class, educated, African American.
