Former mayor of Lancaster, Barbara Little, posted regarding R Rex Parris mailer attacking Johnathon Ervin. She was attacked for her record as mayor, but the mailer wasnt defended (maybe thats progress). I dont know Barbara Little and cant speak to her record as mayor although I must have been a resident of the AV when she served since Ive been a resident since 1988. What I do know, is that the MM (Mayors Mailer), speaks for itself regardless of anyones credentials. Its a racial dog whistle and incites divisiveness and fear. Mayor Parris is a smart man; therefore, I can only conclude this is exactly what it was designed to do. Whether Barbara Little was a good mayor (or bad) is immaterial to the issue. Those that stand and defend this kind of nonsense, and worse those who remain silent, represent not only the ugly side of politics, but the dark side of human nature. Theyre willing to sacrifice truth and tap into our darker angels for political gain. I know some are tired of hearing this theme, but it should not be let go. Those that are currently in positions of leadership, or aspire to be, must be held accountable by the voters when they brazenly and unapologetically resort to these tactics which serve to divide and injure the community, encouraging a climate of intolerance.
