Fracking and Football - - - - - Mitch Unrein Tackles Fracking & Responsible Energy Development By Mitch Unrein, Defensive Tackle for the Denver Broncos Fracking is as much a part of my family’s tradition as football on Sundays. Unreins have worked for the oil and natural gas industry for decades. Before I was on the gridiron, I too worked in the Colorado oil fields alongside my brothers. I remember those times fondly. My brothers and I started out as roughnecks—an important position on the floor of a drilling rig, handling specialized equipment and pressure controls—just as our father Mike did 48 years earlier. Today, my brothers have worked their way up the ladder, growing their careers alongside Colorado’s booming oil and natural gas industry. My father Mike did the same. He went from earning $1.80 an hour in 1966 to working his way up to a project manager. My family’s story is not unique. Fracking benefits every Colorado family, whether you’re an industry employee, teacher, student, business owner or a parent. Here’s just a few ways fracking benefits Colorado families: Jobs: The oil and natural gas industry supports more than 110,000 high-paying Colorado jobs. Tax Revenue: In 2012, fracking helped generate $29.6 billion in economic output making Colorado one of the fastest growing economies in the country. Energy Savings: The average Colorado household experiences $1,200 in savings because of energy production in our state. High-paying jobs. A strong economy. Energy savings. I’m no referee, but it’s a clear call: fracking is a win for Colorado families. - See more at: cred.org/mitch-unrein-fracking/#sthash.0c3E0pKY.dpuf
