Donna Standing Dear Mr. Furey My name is Donna Standing, I am a resident of North Sydney Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A recent announcement from Mayor Clarke and Council, concerning the proposed sale of Archibalds Wharf, in North Sydney, has our small town in shock, and battling to keep our wharf and green space in tact and in the hands of the people where it belongs. Mayor and council did everything within their power to keep this sale from being voiced until such time as finalization of the same. Had it not been for a leak to the public, this venture would have remained unknown to residents of the North Side. This sale is not in the best interest of North Sydney and flies in the face of all rational, financial and logical thinking. The reasoning of the people is that the Ferry Terminal has afforded us with a wonderful asset for future development, by opening up the downtown core to a tremendous amount of foot traffic from travelers going to and from Newfoundland. This company spent approximately 22 million dollars to give us this access, it is free guaranteed traffic. The area will once again be viable and the jobs sustainable. Archibalds Wharf is the only green space in our town, it is very popular with tourists and residents alike, it is a source of pride, and is for the enjoyment of the people. If this town is to ever regain and developed into a viable town, this parcel of land is absolutely necessary. The shipyard deal that is proposed will see an area that cost in excess of 1.6 million dollars, before development, being sold off for 200.000 thousand plus 50.00 for playground equipment. Mayor and council say we will have sustainable jobs, none of which are either a guarantee or a promise. The shipyard will also be scrapping ships, we will have much noise and very much pollution from such an operation. It will be neither be healthy, or attractive to the town, it will both hinder and kill all chances for reclaiming this town. The jobs suggested started off by being 30, then 30 to 50, now we are being told 50 to 100, again nothing promised and everything to lose by the residents. Mayor and council in their infinite wisdom have promised replacement green space either at the Indian Beach or Monroe park...neither are acceptable. Both take the traffic completely away from the down town area which desperately needs to be revitalized, both options are too far way for foot traffic to actually comfortably entertain using. We stand to lose so much more with this shipyard than we can possibly gain. There was a public meeting to discuss the sale of Archibalds Wharf this evening at the fire hall on Pierce street North Sydney. Mayor and Council were all invited, as were both Eykings and our MLA Eddie Orell. Mr. Orell did attend, none of the rest, and he listened, even fielded questions by the public. That fire hall was packed by concerned residents and there was standing room only, the front porch was equally filled to capacity. Our next meeting the Mayor as scheduled in a small pensioners hall, in North Sydney, this venue will hold approximately 100 people, tonight at the fire hall we had close to 400. So far the Mayor sees no reason to change to accommodate the people who have a right to attend. He is deliberately trying to shut us out so that mayor and council can control their show. We hear that CBRM must now change their own rules and guidelines in order to make this sale even legal, if indeed legal then. The whole situation is mind boggling and ludicrous, goes far and beyond to ruin the only chance a small town has to recoup from hard times thrust upon us by mismanagement and being absorbed by the CBRM. This is reprehensible and we desperately need help and intervention to protect us from the very people we elected to serve our best interests. Please help while these people can be halted, once that land is gone, we can never get it back. This is how I see this situation and so many other residents who have been investing their time and energy into saving this town.
