Freedom of expression The University of Fort Hare being the site - TopicsExpress

Freedom of expression The University of Fort Hare being the site struggle and having produced well known leaders like Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe and more, one would expect so much especially understanding and practice of democratic rights…thus, it is a surprise that even when South Africa is a democratic country, the views, opinions and grievances of students are ignored or rather not met for the institution does not have enough funds. The memorandum submitted by students and the task team was handed to and accepted by Professor Somniso (who is the Registrar in the university) who told the students that their demands will be attended to and will receive a response the next Wednesday (23 July). On that day, students and the task team were surprised by the response that the memorandum cannot be accepted if it is not from the SRC (the clowns in fancy clothes), but wasn’t Professor Somniso aware when he signed the memorandum in front of students that SRC wasn’t there (seriously). And what is even worse is the punishment of the task team as if the management are parents running a household. As the public knows that Forte students were evicted in the university because of a strike which turned violent to put pressure on management of Forte, the task team leading the strike were suspend on Friday (01 August)…so if the people who were debating with the management are evicted then who will be representing the students as the 2014 SRC has proved to be useless and only after money, power and being popular forgetting that they are in those positions because of students. It seems as they think SRC positions last a lifetime or they are forgetting that they are also students not Gods of the University. As for the management it seems that sometimes they forget that they are only employed, they are workers which mean they do not own it and its time they realise that students are important stakeholders of the institution that they won’t be sitting in those offices if it were not for them. Students were offered a meal allowance of R350 which is once off (one month only), I mean really. The matter has reached the media obviously but the whole story was not told, a soft version of what is really going on was not there. And the fact that students refused to negotiate is just not true even the person who said it knows this. What is the 2014/2015 SRC (MRC) being fed by the management anyway, students are starting to wonder if the SRC is representing the management because of the actions, it is said “actions speak louder than words”.
