Friday, August 15th: Lake Waccamaw. Lake Waccamaw is a bit over - TopicsExpress

Friday, August 15th: Lake Waccamaw. Lake Waccamaw is a bit over forty miles from our house and is the name of the largest natural lake in North Carolina as well as the name of the town built around the lake. The water in the lake is murky with water the color of tea and floating vegetation. There is a canal that was once navigable by small craft around part of the lake, along the other side of the road the circles the lake. The canal has fallen into disrepair as a number of fallen trees and limbs block the water. We saw a number of turtles, some alligators, and a few birds as we drove along the canal. The area is part of the Green Swamp, most of which is actually covered by long-needle pines.
