Friday thoughts, re: an all-or-nothing approach to eating. Does this sound familiar: eat clean as a whistle Monday thru Thursday, binge nonstop Friday thru Sunday, and then recommit again to start on Monday and be even more strict, strong-willed and perfect. This way of doing things is a trap, because it keeps you locked in having to be perfect with eating or else you might as well screw it and eat everything you want. Youre either perfect or youre completely off and mindless. We do this, dont we? Why? I think we do this because we feel like the only way were going to get results is by doing everything perfectly. And when we inevitably cant--like on Thursday night when we feel drained, have zero willpower and feel like we deserve a reward for being so strict all week--we give in because we are too deprived to not. And in a way, its not *really* our fault because the degree to which we feel deprived is directly related to the degree to which well overindulge later. So the answer is, instead, to find a moderate approach to eating 7 days a week, so that when you hit the weekend, theres no compensatory urges. Youre just good. But, for some reason we dont like moderation. In fact, someone remarked to me recently that eating moderately feels like failure. But 90% clean 7 days a week will ALWAYS beat 4 days clean/3 days binging for long-term results (and sanity). So could you find a way to feel satisfied on Monday so that Fridays binge is smaller? Take the edge off earlier in the week? This is a practice! Remember, the old way will always be there for you! You can always go back to deprive-then-binge, so why not try a more balanced approach daily? Find a way to feel satisfied today. And tomorrow. And Monday. And so on... :) Ox, Jill
