Friday’s Drive-into-Work CD (no more Xmas collections!): “The Fabulous Knickerbockers.” I first took note of this sixties group when I heard their magnificent “Lies” on Lenny Kaye’s classic collection of “Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Age.” “Nuggets.” Listening in retrospect, “Lies” sounds like the missing link between the Beatles (check out Buddy Randell’s Lennon-esque vocal) and seventies punk. It was the band’s only (moderate) hit, so naturally Sundazed led its 1989 collection of “20 Classic Tracks” with it. Lots of other fine period rock on the set, though, for those who like their guitar-driven rock bolstered with periodic joyful screams. Favorite also-ran tracks: “One Track Mind,” the follow-up to “Lies” that shoulda been a contender, and “Chuck Berry Medley,” wherein Beau Charles’ guitar solos grow progressively more raucous with each break between songs. Great stuff.
