Friends in Labor, does your commitment to justice extend beyond humans to non-humans? Friends in the Animal Rights Movement, what is your commitment to stop human suffering at the hands of other human beings? Friends of the environment and conservationists, is quality of life for people and for animals as important to you as the quantity of life for either one? Our Third Stone from The Sun has only a remote of chance of lasting past a few generations if ALL ACTIVISTS look beyond our single issues and recognize the interconnectedness of all these struggles and work together. On this night before Easter in the middle of Passover just three days before Earth Day, during a week devoted by animal rights activists to the barbaric suffering of laboratory animals in the name of quite typically unnecessary experiments in the name of science, on the fifth day that traditional Jews make a journey from spiritual enslavement to freedom via the Counting of the Omer, we need to stop imagining that our issues are not linked, that we can slow the cruelty, the despoliation, the intolerance by continuing to work in our separate silos. I pray that people will continue to specialize in Tikkun Olam from their particular vantage point, but NEVER ignore the need to join together whenever possible. Happy Passover, Happy Easter, Happy Earth Day.
