From April, 2005: kung fu brother Gary Collins from Ireland gives thanks and gratitude to a martial artist all HFY members can give thanks to as well. Here is the story: I have been made aware of a well know fact in the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun family - a professional martial artist named Michael had 6 years of training in a particular lineage of Wing Chun. Michael came into contact with Grandmaster Gee, who gave him a short demonstration of Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun. After seeing this, Michael asked to learn from GM Gee. At this initial meeting, GM Gee refused to teach him because GM Gee at this stage was only teaching privately selected individuals. The following week, Michael drove 200 miles to again visit the GM. Michael again asked for permission to become a student of GM Gee. Again, GM Gee refused to accept him. This cycle continued for another 4 MONTHS, with each week seeing Michael being refused permission. After the 4 months however, GM Gee recognized the genuine dedication of Michael, and arranged to give him 20 hours of private instruction, beginning at 3am in the morning. Michael turned up, and so began learning Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun. This has significance for all present members - this experience influenced GM Gee to actually open up his teachings to the public and reveal more and more of the knowledge he possessed. In reality, I owe this man a lot of thanks because through his dedication, Hung Fa Yi moved closer to being taught in the public as opposed to a private setting. Michael, by showing dedication and being genuine, is directly responsible for me being able to experience Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun now in the public domain. Cheerio, Gary.
