From August 19, 2014. People think of homeless people as being lazy, stupid and intoxicated. This homeless person fought a battle of wits with the Fort Lauderdale City Commission and held his own for several hours. I cannot say that he won, because the commission would go on to pass a series of homeless hate laws over the next few months. But he did get his voice heard and he did get his story on the record in front of a very hostile city commission. In the years that I have worked at the Soup Kitchen, I have seen some pretty smart people walk in the door. I have served food to at least one architect and at least one accountant. Not to mention one middle aged homeless woman who broke up an armed bank robbery with her fists.
