From (Facebook) Joy In Motion ~ Put your right hand on your stomach. At this moment, not only is your hand touching your stomach but your stomach is touching your hand. The point of contact is actually a relationship, with the flow of information and energy traveling in both directions. In the same way, when we touch another person we are also being touched, and when we are being touched we are also touching. In reality you can’t have one without the other. But the effect can be either dampened or amplified depending on your awareness and intention. It seems like such an obvious thing, yet it is incredibly easy to forget. In dancing, the tendency (not the rule) is for leaders to touch and forget they’re also being touched, and for followers to be touched and forget they’re also touching. The greatest possibilities in the dance partnership unfold when we realize that yin and yang exist not just between leader and follower but completely within ourselves. We can both touch and be touched in either role, and rather than creating confusion and conflict it actually creates the richest possibilities for communication and expression. A partnership is strong enough to hold the active and still energies of both individuals at once. Part of the beauty of the dance is learning how a paradox like this is possible, and increasingly bringing its realization into our bodies and relationships.
