Hello: The Vermont Enhanced 911 Board has asked me to contact you and to share with you the media resources that have been produced for the board’s text-to-911 outreach campaign. We hope you’ll find the information useful and that you’ll pass it along to your members or constituents. Vermont is the first state in the nation to have text-to-911 available for 90 percent or more of its population. Subscribers of Verizon Wireless and AT&T located in Vermont can send a text message to 911 to get help in an emergency, if making a voice call to 911 is not an option. The Vermont Enhanced 911 Board is working with other wireless carriers to add text-to-911 services in Vermont, and expects to have text-to-911 available for almost all Vermonters by the end of the year. Now that text-to-911 is widely available in the state, the board is encouraging Vermonters to use the service if they need it. The board is running ads on radio, TV, and online which depict situations where text-to-911 could be useful, such as when a person can’t speak or hear, or when someone would be in more danger if she made a voice call to 911. Sending a text message in such situations could be a lifesaver, and in fact, there already are cases where text-to-911 has saved lives in Vermont.
