From Ronnie Burkett: Tim Sykes may have just won the post-a-pic-of-your-puppetry-hero challenge, not that its a competition and theres no prize to be won. But his fourth of five hero/legend tribute to Waldo Lanchester is simply amazing. Hes done it over six separate posts, because there is such a wealth of information and literally dozens of photos showcasing The Lanchester Marionettes. Ive gone ahead and shared all six to the new Puppetry Heroes: Mentors, Influences, Inspirations, Legends page, so if you like puppets, you should definitely be taking the time to check Tims great posts. And if puppets arent your first love (meaning, youre a civilian), it may interest you to know that Waldos sister was actress Elsa Lanchester (Bride of Frankenstein), who was married to Charles Laughton. Elsa had her own puppet connection, performing at the Turnabout Theater in Los Angeles, home of The Yale Puppeteers (and seriously, come on somebody, post a tribute to the those guys as part of this challenge...hint hint Charles Taylor). Waldo Lanchester also had a play written for his marionettes by George Bernard Shaw titled Shakes Versus Shav (a turgid piece of masturbatory rubbish, in my opinion, but hey...Shaw wrote Waldo a puppet play, so thats a big deal). Anyway, thanks Tim for the amazing offering today in the Puppetry Hero Challenge. (This is a picture from Waldo Lanchesters book, which was the very first puppetry book I owned at the age of seven. I would stare at this photograph for hours. Its still pretty magical.)
