From Sekondi-Takoradi on the 14th of June, 2013, the launch of the Ghana Association of Writers Schools Outreach Programme (GAWSOP) moves to Koforidua, Eastern Region, on Friday, 26th July, 2013. Ghana Secondary School (GHANASS) is the venue, and the start time is 10.00 A.M The aim of this project is to ensure that young Ghanaians aged between 12 and 18 will have the opportunity to engage in literary activities both as writers and readers. On the reading front, it has been observed that in the last 30 years, reading as an activity and reading proficiency have dropped to alarming levels, and this has negative implications for the country’s development. The programme aims at restoring the culture of reading in order to unearth hidden literary talents among students at the second cycle level. This will result in improving the falling standard in the use of the English language. Again the programme will prepare the students for future literary achievements. GAWSOP not only aims at improving writing but also increasing the number of good Ghanaian Writers. GAW and GES believe that reading and writing can be restored to their former glory through intervening at the SHS level. The two organizations also believe that a good literary culture is essential for the all-round development of the individual student, and the whole nation.
