From The Arc of the United States-When a child with a disability is murdered by a parent, too often the national news narrative is sympathetic to the murderer. Coverage includes comments about how hard life must have been and how desperate the parent must have felt to kill his or her child with a disability. The fact is a young boy was thrown off a bridge admittedly by his mother and is now dead. Society must acknowledge that he is a victim, that a crime has been committed and that every effort must be made to ensure justice prevails. Cases like these also expose the gaping holes in our nation’s mental health system (the mother was seeking help due to mental illness), and we have to do better and get people the support and services they need as parents, caregivers, and individuals with I/DD.
