From The Front Porch at the Farm Saturday June 8, 2013 A quiet week at the farm, Kids and Grandkids back to their place of abode following Granddaughter’s wedding.. My wife Linda went to New Mexico with Candace and Johnny so I am keeping busy with grass mowing, gardening and honey do’s. The sights of summer; Two new calves born this week. Please watch for snakes, my wife Linda was about to step on a half grown copperhead at our back door on Tuesday a week ago.. That is the very same place I was bitten in the year 1983. The sounds of summer… The male cicadas have noisemakers called timbales, which they click together at a rapid pace to produce a unique wailing sound. Because their abdomens also include a hollow echo chamber, their song can be exceptionally loud. We have the more common cicadas, popularly known as “dog day cicadas” at the farm because they usually emerge in late spring and hang around year after year. Not to be confused with the 17 year cicada that is appearing this year. Cicadas are often referred to as locusts, though locusts are technically a different species that also appears in epic proportions. Cicadas are related to crickets, while locusts are actually grasshoppers. Thought for today; be careful the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them. Have a blessed Saturday FBF
