My response: The land is called HAMAROA it is also part of the village section of PURAPOTO, it is from the beach to the Rakahanga church. The boundry of the land was given freely by my ancestors from my mother’s line on Repeka, for the Gospel ( Evangelia ). Starts from the Sunday school building near the beach and stops at the Rakahanga Church. The Koro stones built to both sides of the church yard is the boundry of this land called HAMAROA. There is still a small section of this land of HAMAROA from the beach side and it is not part of the church boundry, which we still go to, until to this day it has remained on my mothers side . There is no Marae Mataranui. The meaning of MATARA ( MA TA RA ) is “to separate from the old living to the new” This is when the missionaries along with their elders, Our people carried the old church (it was a Fare Pora ) from Te Kainga across to the short passage lagoon to the new site 1852. Once they step foot on the beach. The name was given MATARA and unto this day, one of the village section is MATARA in Rakahanga. There are five oire (small district) in Rakahanga.
